Will Champion is a freelance percussionist and educator based in Chicago, IL. As a timpanist and percussionist, his recent performing experience includes the Chicago Philharmonic, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Charlotte Symphony, West Michigan Symphony, The New Philharmonic, Rockford Symphony, and Northbrook Symphony. He also held a position of Section Percussion with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic in Poughkeepsie, NY during the 2017-2018 season. His performing and teaching expertise has taken him to nine states in the US, as well as a solo performance in the Netherlands at the TROMP International Percussion Competition. As an advocate of contemporary music, Will has commissioned a new work for percussion duo by retired Metropolitan Opera timpanist, Duncan Patton, to be performed in April 2019 at the Zhou B. Art Center in Chicago. He has also enjoyed freelance work with the Chicago-based beyond this point percussion ensemble, travelling to San Antonio, TX to present a gesture-focused percussion trio composed by Peter O'Gorman at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
Will is eager to work with any age and any level in several different genres: classical, rock, contemporary, jazz, and funk. Currently, Will is the percussion instructor at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, IL and he maintains a private teaching studio. His guest percussion teaching experience includes Lincoln Park High School, The Maple School, Chippewa Middle School and several schools in NC, SC, and FL. Will received his BM in Percussion Performance from Northwestern University in 2016 and pursued graduate coursework at the Manhattan School of Music.
Will joined Chicago Percussion Lessons in March, 2019.
